I like to make a day of it. I go into a high end dept. store and try on everything that appeals to me. Nothing ever full price. I stick to the 50% or more off racks. Macy's, Dillard's, Penney's. Then I go to some of the lower end places to for the cheaper version of the fads. If it is something classic, then I will spend more for it and stick to the higher end. You will get your money worth.
I am a shoe horse by nature(over a 100 pairs)also clearance prices only. Find out what looks good on you. First the colors that flatter you, then the styles, then the lengths. Remember when you try things on, to walk in them to see how they move and how they feel against your skin. Sit down, bend over, stoop. All these positions will tell you how the garment will look if it holds is shape and is flattering and most of all comfortable. Look for pieces that you can paired with others that will give you a whole new outfit for the price of one. I have a teenager and she is brutally honest about how I look. Find one, you can learn a lot from them. She keeps me stylish and hip and I teach her the art of the deal.:D

Go get 3,000.00 Hugo Boss suit. Then staple hundred dollar bills to the outside of it. You will most definitely cause a stir.

Stock up on Bell bottom jeans and platform shoes. They could come back into style.

Start with the internet...seriously...I am just amazed at all the advice out there on fashion, shopping (beauty but I'm sure they have the man's version)
etc...
Seriously, do some reading first and then go to the store...

Wait a minute!!! He's in our lovely town of San Diego!! Sunshine, beach bars, toes in the sand and beautiful weather!! Socal is more of a mellow surf/skate man that enjoys the outdoors with some sun. Here's my recommendation....go to either the surf shops or even Macy's and pick up some nice, soft, light Quicksilver shirts, or Hurley, or whatever your brand. Buy the nice, collared ones. Buy some nice pants, not necessarily slacks, and a pair of comfy, nice shoes. Buy some comfy clothes that aren't too casual, but not too dressy either. Figure out what kind of lady you want to attract, and figure out how you would want to have the first impression to be. If you are looking for a fun little free spirit type of a woman a suit isn't the way to go. Make sense?

Maybe the suit is a little ostentatious, but the $100.00 bills are a must.

Thanks all especially Bchgrl, Bree, Shock.
As usual the women are the only ones who take me seriously, although I'm sure a suit covered in Bengies would be quite a head turner! Haha
Ok I picked up some new shirts, Volcom & Elements on sale at a local surf shop. Casual w/ collars. Was hoping to find a pair of shorts for spring there too but the latest fad appears to be these monsterous plaids. They remind me of my uncles sportcoat from 1978. Awful stuff and i'd feel like I should be driving a clown car wearing them. I'll hit a Target (boy I miss Mervyn's) to get some normal cargo shorts, but what, I wonder does Bchgrl mean by "nice pants, not necessarily slacks, and a pair of comfy, nice shoes."?
My "little brotha" said I should get some ****ies. I want to avoid Dockers, at least the ones with the pleats. George Carlin said they're for old guys trying to disguise their fat asses. As for shoes I don't suppose my Rainbows or Vans aren't gonna cut it but I don't want those crazy genie shoes all the rage now. You know, the long shiny loafers with the square toe. Every time I see a guy in those he's usually wearing a boxy black leather overcoat no matter what the temperature and sporting al lot of shiny gold jewelry. They prowl the beaches in packs here looking so out of place amidst the wetsuits and beachbums looking like swarthy extras in a European gangster movie.
Ladies, please put on my pants and shoes. Pretend I'm your personal Frankenstein or a Colorforms man you'd actually like to be seen with.
BTW I'm not actually TRYING to attract anyone, too damaged for that, just wanna catch up from fifteen years in the relationship bubble. I sell Aloha shirts so my closet if full of them, but since i started working out again, jogging and eating healthy (less carbs more veggies) Nothing fits anymore and i'm suddenly aware i'm the only guy wearing them who's not retired! ;)

Oh heres a Funny -
When @ the surf shop I told the nice female employee I was looking for some stuff but didn't have alot of bread. Looking in her eyes I could tell she'd flatlined. After an uncomfortable silence repeated the word bread slowly as if if varely fit in mer mouth, perhaps to make sure she'd heard me correctly. I quickly explained that bread was a word old people used to call money. oh boy have i got my work cut out for me.
Incidently I learned that the youth call money "Numbers" now. Jeez...

Okay, you are about to hit the scene, first things first acknowledge one thing you are not as old as you think you are. 43 is the new 33, Look online to get ideas, get a make over, I mean go to a salon that caters to both men and women. Go to the gayest guy in the room and tell him "surprise me" (I know this is harder for the men that tend to be alittle more country) Telll him you want something modern but mature, they will do wonders. Then commence shopping to get wardrobe that compliments you again. you don't have to break the bank. Found out what styles, colors and combinations go well with you then target those styles. Don't see what looks good on people, see what looks good on you, with your complexion, Hair Color over all look, Look for the Ross, Marshalls, D D's Discounts you'll be surprised what you can find at a fair price. Also if you want nice dress clothes and not to concerned on brands JC Penney is perfect. (my favorite store) Then once you are cleaned up go out there get'em tiger. Don't be afraid to ask women for help and input they are good at this, and if you can't find one to help you a Gay dude will suffice.

Hey socal-
I am so glad you bought some new shirts!!! How do you feel? I meant buy nice pants are exactly that some d!ckies. You know, costco has some volcom cargo shorts, and they have a variety of shorts that are simple, yet not too casual. I agree with the others about breaking the bank. Ross and Target, and Marshalls are a great place to find what you need. I also agree that early 40s are the new 30s. In fact, being almost 35 (in 3 weeks) I find men in their 40s hot who where clothes that aren't suits, and loafers, etc....I want a guy that can wear the kind of clothes that match his soul. Sounds lame I know, however, I am not attracted to the guy that shows up for a date in a suit and tie. I appreciate the effort, however, I almost feel like he would expect me to dress up as well, which isn't me. I am a Roxy/Billabong/Hurley girl myself. Not because I am trying to be young, but because I look very young and my soul is still very fun and wild!!! I am also the Gap/Banana Republic/Old Navy girl as well. You have to wear what suits you. If you buy clothes outside of who you are, you will not be comfortable and she will notice.
The thing you are shooting for, is for YOU to feel great in your new clothes. Confidence is hot!!
